Coronavirus is something that is disrupting all of our lives, and all of our businesses all over the planet–– really wild times. There will be a huge impact that’s going to come out of it. Great things are born out of crises. It’s the year 2020––the ‘Visionary 20s’. When they talked about the 1920s, they call them the Roaring 20s. We need to upgrade that name. I refer to this decade as the Soaring 20s. And we’re clearly off to a really interesting and complicated start.
Businesses are all closed down. It’s not like you can just easily put the band back together––it’s not like a light switch. You turn it off and back on again. Many of these things will never restart. But, it’s worth noting that during the last recession Airbnb, Slack, Square, Venmo were founded. As I like to say, bull markets produce bullsh•t, and bear markets bear fruit. This is an incredible opportunity for those of you that are working on things, in part, because of the timing right now.
Everybody is working harder than ever. The crypto market is is outperforming gold and equities, and that’s a very good thing. Though, not quite as well as I might have hoped. The entire market took quite a bath.
The US government is giving away trillions of dollars. What does that look like to you? It looks like the biggest airdrop in history to me, and it appears that the work that we’re doing in this industry is being observed, recognized, and even copied to some extent. Guy Kawasaki, discussing the economic effects of large amounts of money printing, says buy gold, silver, and bitcoin.
As a conscious capitalist, when I give $1, I don’t want to see twenty cents going to a cause. I want to see $1 going to a cause, or at least something close to it. Ideally, I want to see a multiplier on that, not just in the same way I seek a return on investments. I seek a return on impact. If I give $1, I want to see $2 worth of impact. And that can be through partnerships and matching funds or finding the right organizations that are really efficient or know how to leverage capital to make a big impact.
The question is, Why are you on this earth? I want to make the biggest positive impact that I can. A George Washington quote resonates a lot with me right now: “Truth will ultimately prevail where there is pain to bring it to light.” I think the world is undergoing incredible pain right now. And we have one of two choices, one is fear. Suicide rates are off the charts, and depression is setting in all over. The thing to remember through these difficult times is that this is an opportunity––an opportunity to basically get your house in order.
The things that you’ve been putting off for months or weeks, maybe even years, this is a chance to address those things. And I don’t mean that just literally. It’s much more important figuratively. This is an opportunity to take a look at your life and to reevaluate, to reset, to make those plans to do your best work. I like this Hopi prophecy, too: “When the earth is ravaged and the animals are dying, a new tribe of people shall come unto the earth from many colors, classes, creeds, and who by their actions and deeds shall make the earth green again. They will be known as Warriors of the Rainbow.”
I believe we’re living through these times. In order to change the outside, you must first change inside, because we only have the power to change ourselves. We can only change ourselves, and through our actions, we may inspire others to change themselves. And, important in these times is to really focus on being your best self––to live your highest potential.
I like to tip my hat to Satoshi, so I use a lot of Japanese words. The word Kaizen is important right now. Kaizen refers to continuously improve all functions and involve everyone in that process. Kaizen is the Sino-Japanese word for “improvement”.
Everyday, wake up and figure out how you can be better than you were the day before. With everything that you work on, look at how you can do that better, to aspire for perfection. And so, during these times, I encourage everyone to believe most importantly in themselves and their potential, that you can make a difference, that we can make a difference, that we can change the world, that we can make this a better place and to choose love, not fear.
This is a time to be hopeful. I believe that humanity is going through a great awakening. After this is all said and done, we will be better for it. And, don’t forget to love our mothers, specifically Mother Earth.
We need a new definition of a billionaire; that is, as someone who positively impacts the lives of a billion people. How can we do this? How can we impact a billion lives? How can we build a better world? Well, it takes teamwork. We have new tools to achieve this, the tools that we’re as an industry specifically focused on I think, are going to be instrumental in making the great changes that are possible right now.
But, more importantly, I encourage everyone to dream––no matter what industry you’re in, no matter what you’re doing. Dream big and visualize your dreams in these ‘Visionary 20s’ the world that you want to create, the products you want to create, and why you want to create them. Focus on the impact or the goal and dream as big as you can, because nothing is impossible. The word itself says I am possible. This is an opportunity to write our story. Not His Story anymore, and hopefully it becomes a little bit more of Her Story.
What kind of story do you want to write? And what will the people of the future say about us as more of us unplug from the matrix every day, awakening to the fact that we are the main characters in the movie of our lives? You are the director, the writer, and the actor in your script, in your movie. So write a great one. We go from being prisoners of our own perspectives, understanding that the future is what we want, so let’s make it a beautiful one. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has. We can build a better world. And as we come out of this great crisis, we will be better for it.
